I accept a Linksys WRT54G2 v1.five. I take upgraded the firmware to the newest available. I am currently letting it just run off DHCP, merely I'm going to be setting a static IP upwardly as soon equally I figure out what the problem is. I had a cable technician out, and he replaced whatsoever faulty coax ends and cables and performed maintenance on our exterior box.
At present, for the trouble:
I run ii desktops hardwired to the router, and I run a wireless network at the same time. Only having the internet run through the router throttles the speed to 9.4 mb/due south downwards. If I hardline straight to the desktop from the modem, I get 34 mb/s down. Surely the router tin can't be splitting the speed that much. We just had our net upgraded, and that 9.4 mb/s hasn't inverse. It's ever capped out at that speed through the router. I can't figure out if it's just the router that can't go college than that, or if perchance there is a setting I need to alter to maximize my speed. I've tried footling with the MTU past setting information technology to transmission with no real change in speed. I'm also running WPA2 security settings on the router, but even when I tried taking down the firewalls on my computer, no speed difference.
Any advice on this affair? I'd similar to keep this router if I tin.

First your cable company normally provides the MAX speed of 50Mbps (there was another thread discussing more than on this and so give me a moment) over the WAN port (You>Cable>World). This is still susceptible to the fact they do NOT guarantee a minimum over that connection, and if everyone was home for July fourth and probably lots of kids on the Internet, Dads watching Sports replay videos, etc. your going to be impacted on that finish; and so keep this in mind going forrad.
2d the new 50Mbps (and next is 100Mbps they are already pumping out) is all-time served / optimized by your Cablevision Visitor PROVIDED 2in1 Router/Wifi/Modem. Yous would have to store SPECIFICALLY for hardware that supports 50+Mbps over WAN << Not the same matter as handling 54mbps over wireless >>. Personally I wouldn't try that considering we are getting to the betoken of specialized equipment (not ordinarily at Walmart) for a specific service provider. The problem though with what I researched on the Cablevision companies providing the hardware is numerous visits of techs (as yous found your COAX needed replacing), numerous support calls, and somewhen after dozens and dozens of these calls you lot volition be finally setup for the new service and getting the speed your request for. A lot of short term pain for long term gain.
So Yep your router IS a problem at this infinitesimal, only based on that.
Third I am confused past your posts. If you could install Networx (http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/), and then enable the graph in your toolbar, on your wired desk examination "speed" by doing a download (say Avast! from www.filehippo.com) that we tin easily replicate / compare for the wireless machines? If ALL machines are getting 9Mbps, then yea your router IS a problem. If information technology is just the Wireless Just getting 9Mbps THAT can exist totally different. Then please specify what you get doing the same download from the aforementioned website, 1 on the wired and one on the wireless please.

WMM and QoS are already disabled.
Not sure resetting the router will do anything, simply I'll attempt.
Does anyone have any suggestions for wireless linksys routers that could handle this increase in internet speed, that is under $80? When I look up my current router on newegg, it seems to say that it could handle 54mb/southward, merely perhaps that'southward talking near something else? (I figured it wasn't transfer rate, because that is rated 10/100 in the specs.) I merely wanted to make sure whatever new router I get can handle it.
Edit: No inkling wtf the wireless ping fluctuation thing is, but whatever.

9mb/south seems low though, even for a bad router. My former one before I upgraded still got me like 20mb/s or then.
I would endeavour resetting everything though , plug in 1 pc and and so practise a speed test. Make sure no torrents are going etc. Maxing your upload stream tin can kill you download stream considering information technology can't even transport the info fast to become it back properly. That was another problem in my identify, people install utorrent, it automatically defaults to full upload stream, they get out things seeding, net sucks and I get no speed and have to go around to 9 PC's and effigy out who is uploading and killing the net. lol.

Should I restore to factory default settings, attempt it, then upgrade the firmware, then effort it again?

Edit: No clue wtf the wireless ping fluctuation thing is, just any.
The guide was to assistance resolve issues with ping fluctuations while connected wirelessly, mainly for gamers or high availability applications.
For example while running your game information technology randomly jumps from 70ms to 800ms making the game lag out, because of this your abilities don't actuate or accept effect when you press the push button.
I advise getting a new router.
